Photography was still in its infancy at the start of the American Civil War, yet photographers found their way to the battlefields.
The slow speed of the photographic materials at that time made it impossible to capture the motion of the war's battles, but the many moments that were lived before and after those battles were sucessfully photographed.
The exhibition is intended to illustrate and re-live those moments "Between the Battles" of the civil war period.
"Between the Battles" is a collection of 40, framed, vintage photographs.
The majority are large format vintage albmen prints with an example of stereocards, varte de visites and tintypes.
Included are original portraits of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, Generals Grant and Lee, Photographic documentation of what camp life at Brandy Station and City Point was like, and several major landmarks.
Text panels are included which enrich the viewers understanding of the Civil War, and of the dawning of photographic technology.
Included in the exhibit are pages from photographer Alexander Gardner's 1866 Sketchbook of the War.
Very few complete copies have survived.
Some are archived in library collections and others can be found in private collections.
It is from one of these few private photography collections that "Between the Battles" is comprised.
